Habits maketh or break a person. Especially when it comes to your health, the choices you make have a lasting impact on the body. In this article, let us talk about some common dental habits that people follow which put their teeth at risk of an ailment/injury.

Here are some of these:

1) Grinding your Teeth

This is a common habit observed both in children and amongst adults. People with this habit usually grind their teeth involuntarily whilst sleeping resulting in symptoms such as jaw pain, ear pain & headaches. Possible causes of involuntary grinding of the teeth are stress & anxiety.

For children who grind teeth, it is mandatory to train & coach them to avoid performing the action. If needed, you can also use a mouth guard to prevent grinding from affecting the teeth whilst sleeping.

2) Consuming extremely cold/hot food items

Consuming food items that are either too hot/cold might result in damage to the teeth when done frequently over a period of time. Chewing on ice also ought to be avoided as it might result in cracks in enamel when done frequently.

3) Not wearing a guard whilst playing aggressive sports

Be it boxing or karate or wrestling, it is vital that you wear a mouth guard to protect your teeth from the injuries that might get inflicted if the sport turns violent. The presence of a mouth guard prevents the teeth from getting chipped or broken. Mouthguards are usually available in the nearby sports store where you buy your supplies.

4) Tongue piercings

Tongue piercings are a trend that is widely popular amongst youngsters. But, it is important to keep in mind that these piercings play a major role in the proliferation of bacteria. They can also lead to other issues such as chipping of teeth, gum recession & swollen tongue when the piercings get infected. This is why you ought to avoid tongue piercings for the sake of better oral health.

5) Drinking carbonated water

Drinking soda and consuming heavy quantities of sugar leads to tooth decay as well as other side-effects. It can also lead to symptoms such as tooth sensitivity over the long run.

6) Consuming oily foods frequently

Consuming oily foods frequently results in the formation of plaque over the long run. It is also not good for your body either.

7) Not maintaining proper oral hygiene

Last but not least, it is very vital that you brush and floss regularly. Failure of properly taking care of your oral habits regularly might result in tooth decay and other oral health issues.

If you are suffering from symptoms that denote the presence of an oral ailment, you ought to consult a dentist at the earliest. Make sure that you avoid the poor dental habits that are mentioned in this article. Take care!
