Acid reflux is a common discomfort that is experienced by older folks. In this article, let us discuss about acid reflux and the effect it has on your oral health.

Relation between acid reflux and dental health

There has been many studies that show a correlation between acid reflux and oral health.

Acid reflux causes tooth erosion long before it causes real harm to your body and your orthodontist would be one of the first to notice whether or not you have a gastrointestinal ailment/acid reflux. Acid reflux plays a role in removing the enamel that is present in the back of the teeth, especially in premolars and molars. This damage to the teeth is caused when acid escapes from the esophagus and seeps to the teeth.

Having understood the damage acid reflux might cause on your oral health, here is how to prevent damage to your tooth enamel via acid reflux:

  • Consult a dentist and explain your predicament to him/her. Your dentist might prescribe a few antacids or tablets that might stop/slow down this process.
  • Go for regular dental cleanups to keep your teeth and gums in top order.
  • Watch what you eat. Make sure to avoid sugary drinks that might accentuate the process of tooth erosion. Avoid eating foods that are acidic in nature.
  • Brush your teeth immediately after each diet.
  • Choose a toothpaste that is rich in fluoride.
  • Try to keep the pH in your mouth high by consuming food that is neutral/not too acidic. Also drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Avoid

Try to avoid consuming the following food and drinks:

  • Wine/Beer
  • Sugar
  • Chocolates
  • Citric fruits like orange and lemon
  • Fruit juices/stain causing drinks

How to detect tooth erosion caused by acid reflux?

You can detect the tooth erosion caused by acid reflux in the following ways:

  1. Loss of tooth sensitivity due to reduction in amount of enamel
  2. Discolouration present in the teeth
  3. Cracks and crevices present in the teeth

If you see any of the signs in your teeth and suffer from acid reflux, refer a dentist as soon as possible before the issue becomes serious.
