Are you finding yourself with an odd black coating on your tongue? If so, you may be suffering from a condition known as a black hairy tongue. This strange affliction is a harmless condition that can affect anyone and is more common than you might think. So if you’re curious about what causes it and its symptoms, read on!

What is a Black hairy tongue?

A Black hairy tongue is a condition that affects the tongue’s appearance, causing it to look furry or hairy. Though the name sounds intimidating, the condition is usually harmless and temporary. The discolouration occurs due to an overgrowth of papillae, buildup of dead skin cells, bacteria, and other debris, leading to discolouration and altered taste sensation.

This can be caused by various factors, including poor oral hygiene, smoking, certain medications, and bacterial infections. While the tongue’s appearance can be alarming to those experiencing it, the condition can be treated with improved oral hygiene and medication adjustments if necessary.

How common is black hairy tongue?

According to the American Academy of Oral Medicine, 13% of persons will experience a black hairy tongue at some point in their lives. Although it affects all demographics, men and people over 65 are more likely to experience it than younger people.

Symptoms of black hairy tongue?

  • You may suffer from gagging or a tickling sensation if the papillae are overgrown excessively
  • Bad breath
  • A tongue that looks hairy or furry
  • Black discolouration of the tongue, although the colour may be brown, green, or white, changes the taste of your food.

Main causes of black hairy tongue?

Drinking lots of coffee and tea

Drinking large amounts of coffee and tea can contribute to developing this condition due to the high levels of tannins they contain. Tannins are natural substances in various plants and fruits, such as tea leaves and coffee beans. They can cause the papillae on the tongue to become stained, leading to black or brown patches on the tongue.

Tobacco and alcohol

When the papillae on the tongue become elongated and trap bacteria, fungi, and tobacco residues. As these particles accumulate, they gradually turn the tongue black and look hairy. The longer the habit of smoking and drinking continues, the more likely the black hairy tongue will develop.

Poor oral hygiene

Poor oral hygiene is a common cause of black hairy tongue. When individuals do not brush or floss regularly, food particles and bacteria can accumulate in the mouth, causing plaque buildup. This plaque can trap bacteria on the tongue and lead to inflammation and discolouration of the papillae.

Medication

medications containing sulfur or antibiotics can cause a black hairy tongue. This happens when the tiny bumps on the tongue, called papillae, grow longer and trap bacteria and other debris, resulting in a dark appearance.

Bottom line

Black hairy tongues are terrifying to look at and hear. Yet, the illness is typically safe and simple to treat. Make an appointment with your healthcare professional if you have tried home cures and they have not been successful. They can identify the problem’s root cause and suggest strategies to maintain your tongue’s health.
