Not often do we come across people with the perfect set of teeth and yes, that flawless smile. But the advancement in dental fields has paved the way for crafting the perfect set of teeth and smiles. And for those with an overbite, you might have come across your dentist suggesting you opt for Forsus Springs.

So what exactly does that mean? A Forsus Spring is a dental appliance fixed with a spring to the lower and upper jaw. The idea is to push the upper teeth backward while seamlessly pulling the lower teeth forward to resolve the overbite.

What is an Overbite?

If you or your child has an overbite, it typically means your dental structure is defined in a way where the frontal or the upper set of teeth is placed forward while the lower teeth are pushed backward. This could often result in an awkward smile and dental posture thus giving a major blow to one’s confidence.

In most cases, a dentist usually suggests braces to resolve the issue but only when an overbite seems too complex to be fixed, the person is advised to go for a Forsus Spring which with the help of springs attached helps push the frontal upper teeth backward.

How Long Does It Take to Work?

Generally speaking, there’s no particular time frame as to how the movement of the dental structure reacts. In some cases, a Forsus Springs needs to be used for roughly 4- 6 months while in other cases it needs to be fixed as long as the overbite is corrected which again fairly depends on the individual.

How Does It Work?

A Forsus Spring is attached to the upper set of teeth with the help of a spring right near the back molars.

Near the lower canine in the lower set of teeth, a push rod with a spring is attached that gradually pushes the teeth to the front using the telescopic rod.

The orthodontist will evaluate the condition of the overbite and will suggest the time frame the person is supposed to wear the Forsus Springs.

Who Is Eligible to Wear Forsus Springs?

Anyone with an overbite issue is eligible to wear Forsus springs. Though the severity is determined by your orthodontist, there are typical criterias that decide when a person should opt for these dental appliances:

  • When a patient is typically not comfortable with rubber bands (or orthodontic elastics) and looking for a dental appliance that is permanent.
  • When a patient has an extreme overbite that doesn’t settle down by wearing orthodontic elastics on their own.
  • An orthodontist or patient wants to avoid the extraction of permanent teeth.

How to Clean Your Forsus Springs?

Since the Forsus Springs are a complex design element that houses several parts that include a spring, chances are there that small food particles might get stuck in between them. Though there are very few diet restrictions associated with this dental appliance, here are a few ways you can keep them clean and free of dirt.

  • The basic thumb rule is obviously brushing your teeth regularly. Nothing feels like a good brushing routine after and before your bed. Make sure to get your bristles to the corner and springs so those food particles are thoroughly cleaned. Don’t go full bonkers with their action as they can damage your Forsus Springs, make sure to be gentle when brushing over the springs.
  • Use any regular mouthwash to regularly floss your teeth after every meal. This does not only ensure your Forsus Spring is steered clear of any food particles but also makes sure you are secured from any bad breath.

Bottom line

No matter how bad your overbite complications may look, your orthodontist will evaluate the condition and will be able to draft the perfect solution using Forsus Springs that can get your issue fixed better and permanently. Do visit your dentist on a regular basis to embark on a journey towards proper dental care.
