Though teeth are strong in nature, they get broken when they get in contact with any hard substance, or when the tooth is hardly got hit somewhere. It may turn as a severe crack or a lesser chip on the edge of the tooth. This weakens the teeth and opens the nerve. A chipped tooth can be treated at the dental clinic and there is no way to treat the chipped tooth at home. If it is left untreated it may lead to some hidden risks to your health.

Risks associated with an untreated chipped tooth

1. Your tongue may get hurt or cut. Because the chipped tooth will be sharp and you may end up hurting your tongue by biting it unknowingly.

2. If the crack is deep, bacteria may enter those areas and enter into the inner pulp. The tooth will lose its efficiency and ends as a dead tooth.

3. When the teeth get cracked, infection over the area is inevitable. The cracked tooth will then be unable to chew or break the food we eat. The pressure applied over time is unbearable by the cracked tooth which ends in damaging the entire tooth completely or it may even break down completely.

4. When the bacteria enter into the cracks and infect the inner pulp, blood vessels, and nerves also get infected by the bacteria which discharges a substance called abscess. These abscesses are release from the cracked tooth which infects the oral hygiene. If it is left untreated, the infection gets extended to the cheekbone and creates other side effects.

5. Sepsis is a disease that occurs with a bacterial infection in any part of your body. The dental abscess which occurs because of the cracked tooth will also lead to sepsis.

What causes a chipped tooth?

1. When you bite hard substances like ice, candy, etc.

2. When you fall down or met with an accident and get injured on your mouth or teeth.

3. When you play without a mouth guard.

4. Teeth grinding also causes a chipped tooth.

A chipped tooth may not be considered hard at the initial stage, but the impact in leaving it untreated will be dangerous. Hence, visit a dentist when you found your teeth cracked or chipped.
