Dental implant surgery has been one of the most popular oral surgeries in recent times. Dental implants are performed for a myriad of reasons and help provide relief to patients. Right from replacing a missing tooth to reducing the impact of an accident, dental implants are indeed very diverse when it comes to their applications.

Dental implants are usually made up of titanium and placed into the jawbone by a dental surgeon. Whilst there are several factors that determine the duration of the procedure, here are some tips that ought to be followed before the procedure:

  • Rinse your mouth with a mouthwash that is well known to fight bacteria. A good example would be chlorhexidine.
  • Take the prescribed medicine that is suggested by the dentist.
  • Unless you are sedated, you can have a healthy breakfast on the day of the surgery.

During the procedure, your mouth will most probably be numbed with local anesthesia.

After the procedure is completed, to ensure the longevity of the implants and for your safety, here are some tips:

  • Eat and drink only soft or semi-solid foods immediately after the procedure.
  • Hold an icepack on the affected region if swelling persists.
  • Practice proper oral hygiene and brush twice daily without fail.
  • Keep your mouth as clean as possible as the success of your dental implants depends on it.
  • Rinse your mouth after a meal.
  • Floss your mouth regularly.
  • Use a brush that is not too rough and is less abrasive. Your brushing technique ought to be uniform and should cover all surfaces in and around the implant.

It would take anywhere from 6 to 9 months for your gums to completely heal. Try to consume a diet of soft food, drinks and avoid crunchy food for some time after the procedure. Never hesitate to refer a dentist if you have any issues with dental implants that are placed in your jawbones.
