What causes mouth sores after wearing dentures?

The initial stage of wearing dentures is quite annoying because the underneath tissues should adjust with the new prosthetic device. Such irritations might happen even after extracting a few teeth.

It is not uncommon to have some throbbing pain, swelling, or soreness in your gums when you wear dentures for the first time. Such throbbing pain exists until your mouth used to get the new artificial teeth set. It should subside in the following weeks else it is denoting a glitch in the denture teeth.

Why do denture teeth cause soreness in the mouth?

Most of the time, pain and soreness after wearing dentures arise for the following 3 reasons:

  • Irritation in Gums – At first, the prolonged wearing of dentures will press the nerves that make the gums feel sore. Moreover, the bumps & irregularities present beneath the gum flap should adjust with the denture plate. If not, it provokes mild to harsh pain and it intensifies while biting and chewing.
  • Bacterial Infections – The spread of bacteria begins when the food particles stuck between the gums and dentures. If you do not clean the dentures properly, the bacterial build-up takes place, causing infections followed by mouth sores. Using denture adhesives will help in preventing the food trap between the teeth set and gum line.
  • Poor-fitting dentures – If the denture teeth become loose or not fitted properly inside your mouth, it will annoy the surrounding tissues to cause mouth sores.

  • Take Pain Relief Gel – Apply topical gels and Creams over the sore regions in your gums. Such anesthetics help in reducing the pain caused by dentures.
  • Medications – Over-the-Counter medications like Ibuprofin or others prescribed by your dental doctor are also helpful in reducing pain and inflammation in gums.
  • Eat Soft Foods – Taking hot, acidic, spicy, and sticky foods while having dentures will cause irritations. So we recommend denture wearers follow a soft food diet to minimize soreness feeling. Don’t forget to rinse your dentures with a cup of clean water after eating. It helps in cleansing the food particles stick over the denture teeth.
  • Remove dentures are night – Before going to bed, take the dentures out from your mouth and soak them in a cup of denture-cleaning liquid. This practice tends to eliminate microbes and other deposits stuck in between them. Besides this, it helps the gums and the underlying tissues relax for some time.
  • Brush the denture teethClean your denture teeth with a denture cleaning brush as well as your teeth. Remember that the regular toothbrush we are using can cause bruises over the denture plate.
