Does Smoking cause receding gums?

Smoking has long been linked to several health issues, including damage to the gums. Recent studies have suggested that Smoking could contribute to receding gums. It is a condition where the gum tissue around the teeth begins to pull away, leading to further dental problems. What is Receding gums?

Receding gums is one of the first symptoms of gum disease. It is a dental condition where the gum tissue surrounding the teeth starts to pull back and expose the teeth or their roots. Receding gums can cause tooth sensitivity, make the teeth look longer, and increase the risk of developing gum disease. 

However, it is well known that smokers are more likely to develop gum disease than non-smokers. So It’s important to address receding gums as soon as possible to prevent further damage to the teeth and gums.

Does Smoking Cause Gum Recession?

Yes, because chewing or smoking tobacco contains 30 cancer-causing chemicals, which can cause serious health problems. And also, smoking weakens the immune system, making it harder for the body to fight against infections and inflammations in the gums. This may eventually lead to long-term gum disease and tooth loss. 

It can also cause other oral health-related issues such as chronic bad breath, lack of sense of smell and taste, stained teeth and tongue, increased plaque and tartar buildup, increased risk of jawbone loss, and oral cancer.

  • Periodontal disease
  • Aggressive brushing
  • Teeth grinding
  • Certain medical conditions

How to Get Rid of Gum Recession 

  • Maintaining a dental hygiene routine daily is important to eliminate gum recession.
  • Using tobacco products eats away at the gum tissue. It is recommended to stop using tobacco or to reduce it completely drastically. To stop using tobacco products, consult a doctor and a periodontist. They will offer advice to assist the gums in regaining their healthy state.
  • Getting your dental check-ups 2 twice a year helps to spot dental problems, and your dentist helps you to prevent your teeth from further complications.
  • Eat healthy diet

As we age, dental problems begin to occur more frequently, and smokers are far more likely to feel pain and discomfort in the teeth. So it is important to consult a dentist to avoid any further complications.
